A simple process to choose without regret
If you are at a crossroads, you are not broken. You are brave and paying attention. I know the swirl. The tight chest. The Sunday night knot in your stomach. The late night scroll where every job looks perfect for someone else and nothing feels quite right for you.
You do not need a louder sign from the universe. You need a smaller experiment. Most choices are not forever. Most are testable. When you trade rumination for one tiny action, your body settles, your confidence returns, and your next step gets clearer.
I remember a huge decision that weighed heavily on me. It was a “should I stay or should I go” moment. I was in a job I had loved and thought I would retire from, but the environment took a sharp turn and I began to question everything. My breathing went shallow. My hands felt clammy at the thought of staying where I no longer felt aligned. My heart literally hurt. That misalignment felt like a lack of integrity with myself and it chipped away at my sense of being. It started as a gentle tap on the shoulder to consider moving on, then became a spiritual 2 x 4 saying, “Hey, do something.” I took a leap of faith and left, not knowing whether I had a place to land. It was the best decision I ever made.
Below is a one week practice I call the Crossroads Lab. It blends small experiments with inner listening, Imagineering, and my Thought Coins practice. Give it ten to twenty minutes a day. By the end of the week you will have a clean yes.
The Crossroads Lab: 7 Days To A Clean Yes
Keep one simple page nearby. I call it your Decision Ledger. Each day, score each option from 0 to 10 on three things: Energy (how alive I felt), Evidence (what facts I saw), and Ease (how much friction there was). This is kind data. No judgment.
Day 1. Set Your Game Board
Write one honest sentence: “I am choosing between ___ and ___ by [date].”
Now define the two paths clearly so the rest of the week stays simple.
- Stay Path = remain where you are and change the way you do it. You test adjustments like boundaries, responsibilities, schedule, or focus.
- Start Path = begin something new. You test a small pilot that represents the new direction.
Label each path as reversible or irreversible. Reversible means you can try it and return without major loss. Irreversible means you cannot easily undo it. Add two columns to your Ledger, one per path.
Example: “I am choosing between staying in my role with a re-scoped schedule and starting a small consulting pilot by June 30.”
Day 2. Body Barometer Baseline
Your body speaks first. Sit quietly for three minutes. Say the Stay Path out loud. Notice breath, jaw, chest, belly. Then say the Start Path and notice again.
A tight throat or clenched jaw often signals “not for me right now.” A gentle exhale, dropping shoulders, and curious calm often signal “green light.” Log Energy and Ease for both. If you feel nothing, that is a signal too. Stay with it. Clarity grows with attention.
Day 3. The 48 Hour Reversible Test
Pick the most reversible path and run the tiniest experiment you can finish in two days.
- Stay Test. Live as your most aligned self in the current role for 48 hours. Move one meeting to protect focus. Say one clean no. Ship one meaningful thing that matters to you.
- Start Test. Run a micro version of the new direction. Pitch three people. Host a 45 minute pilot on Zoom. Shadow someone already doing it for one hour.
Log what actually happened. That is your Evidence. Did Energy rise. Did Ease improve. Did anything real move.
Day 4. Imagineering Postcards
Invite your future self into the room. Write two short postcards dated six months from now. One from each path. Keep it specific.
“I wake up feeling ___.”
“The work that lights me up is ___.”
“A cost I did not expect was ___.”
“A gift I did not expect was ___.”
Circle the lines that feel like deep truth in your body. Put those phrases into your Ledger as Signals. This is Imagineering. Let the future guide the present.
Day 5. Thought Coins Audit
Your mind spends thoughts like money. Some thoughts drain you. Some thoughts invest in you.
Draw two columns.
- Fear Coins I keep spending
“What if I am not ready.”
“What will they think.”
“If I choose wrong my life is over.” - Faith Coins I will spend instead
“I am ready for one pilot.”
“Alignment attracts the right support.”
“Any choice gives data. I can course correct.”
Flip one coin and attach a 24 hour action.
Example: Flip “I am not ready” into “I am ready for one pilot,” then send three invitations today. Log whatever comes back. That is Evidence.
Day 6. The 30 Minute Clarity Circle
Invite two thoughtful people. Share your Decision Ledger, your 48 hour test, one Imagineering line that will not let you go, and your top two Fear to Faith flips. Ask for one thing only. A blind spot. A resource. Or a blessing. End by asking each person to reflect one sentence they hear as your truth. Write those in your Ledger. This is Collaborative Imagineering. Insight multiplies when two or more gather with intention.
If asking others feels scary, say this: “I am not asking you to decide for me. I am asking for one reflection so I can hear myself better.”
Day 7. Minimum Viable Commitment
Add up your Energy, Evidence, and Ease scores for each path. Which total is higher today. Choose it.
If you chose a reversible path, commit to a 30 day sprint with one success metric. Keep it simple.
If you chose an irreversible path, create a staged plan with two review points on your calendar. Bring your Ledger to each review.
Close open loops with grace. Thank mentors. Decline what is no longer aligned. Archive the tabs. Your nervous system needs clean endings so you can begin well.
By now you have collected evidence, felt your truth in your body, and named a workable next step. That quiet steadiness you feel is alignment. Keep it.
Three Rules That Prevent Regret
Rules calm the nervous system. When choices feel overwhelming, I come back to three anchors that keep me honest, brave, and moving.
- Experiments beat rumination. If the door is reversible, move. Data is kinder than guessing. One tiny test today is worth more than a perfect plan next month.
- Bodies do not gaslight. Pair your spreadsheet with the body barometer. Your body is honest. When the mind argues in circles, your breath and shoulders tell the truth.
- Coins create momentum. A flipped Thought Coin without a next action in 24 hours slides back into fear. Flip, act, and log the evidence. Confidence is the residue of repeated action.
If you remember nothing else, remember these. > Small tests. > Honest body signals. > A flipped Thought Coin paired with action. These three will carry you farther than a month of overthinking.
Scripts You Can Use
Words get wobbly when emotions run high. Use these as training wheels. Gentle, clear, and true. Choose the script that matches the path you are testing.
Boundary while you test the Stay Path
“Thanks for thinking of me for this. I would love to support, and I am at capacity this week. To still meet the goal, I recommend [alternative or timeline]. If that works, I can take the next step on [date].”
Reset your role while you test the Stay Path
“I am experimenting with a focus window from 9 to 11 so I can deliver higher quality work. For requests during that time, please send them by noon and I will confirm by 2. This helps me protect deep work and serve the team better.”
Pilot ask while you test the Start Path
“Hi [Name], I am running a small pilot to help [audience] achieve [specific result] in the next 2 weeks. It is one 45 minute session and a short follow up. No cost. I am gathering feedback. Would you like one of the three spots.”
Interest check for the Start Path
“I am exploring a new offer focused on [problem] for [audience]. If I created a simple pilot that solved [specific outcome] in 2 weeks, would that interest you. If yes, reply with ‘curious’ and I will send details.”
Graceful no to clear loops
“Thank you for thinking of me. It is a no for now so I can honor a priority I have committed to. I am grateful for the invite and cheering you on.”
Tweak the language to sound like you. The point is not perfect phrasing. It is creating clean and kind boundaries so your next step has room to land.
Next Step
If you want a thinking partner while you run this, book an Imagineering Session with me. We will flip your Thought Coins, listen to your body’s cues, and design the smallest bold step that moves you forward.
Schedule fifteen minutes with yourself today to start the Crossroads Lab. One postcard. One coin flip. One tiny experiment. Movement creates clarity. I am cheering you on.
